Vacancy for a Governor at Ickleford Primary School

Ickleford Primary School – Co-opted governor vacancy

We have a vacancy for a co-opted governor following the resignation of one of our team due to work commitments. Governorship is challenging but also rewarding. You do not need to have a background in education but, rather, are expected to bring your work- and life experiences to bear to act as the school’s ‘critical friend’.

What is expected from a governor?

Before considering this role, you will naturally want to know what is expected of you. All governors are required to:

  • help set and deliver the school’s strategy and aims
  • ensure financial oversight
  • hold the school leaders to account for the performance of the school

Some governors have additional specific responsibilities, e.g. Safeguarding, Special Educational Needs.

Governors are expected to attend Full Governing Board meetings (twice a term) and be a member of at least one of the following Committees – Personnel; Finance; Buildings, Health & Safety; Performance and Development (1-2 meetings per term). In most cases, meetings are held in the early evening.

You would also have responsibility for overseeing a subject area, liaising with the teacher who leads that subject and assessing progress against the agreed actions within the School Development Plan.

More information can be found on the National Governance Association website – nga.org.uk. Alternatively, feel free to contact me (details below) for an informal discussion.

This is a great opportunity to contribute to the education of our pupils, and I encourage you to give it serious consideration. As the governing board of a school which encourages diversity and inclusivity, we welcome applications from individuals from every background/sphere of society.

If you are interested in this role, please submit a short (up to 250 words) document in support of your application by Monday 1st November to me in writing c/o the school or via email. I look forward to hearing from you.

Best wishes,

Miles Maxwell, Chair of Governors
