NOTICE
IN-RIVER RESTORATION WORK TO COMMENCE ON
SEPTEMBER 1ST 2026 *
The purpose of the in-river work is –
To improve water flow and quality
To improve wildlife habitats
To manage vegetation
To protect and increase biodiversity and wildlife species for the long term
To support the river network restoration project across the region
The Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust have employed experienced contractors R.J.Bull to carry out the work. They will be accessing the site from the opposite side of the river. The work will take 3-4 weeks.
R.J.Bull have permission to remove fencing temporarily where necessary, and to access the Common for light coppicing. And to reset a bench to face the river.
On September 14th there will be a small working party of volunteers from the River Hiz Conservation Group (RHCG) helping the contractors. RHCG now regularly monitor the health of the river, recording the smallest forms of life.
The in-river work will include –
Regrading the river bank at the bend where sheep access the river to drink.
Adding natural materials to create water deflectors, which increase water flow.
Adding natural materials to create habitats for in-river wildlife.
Managing vegetation and coppicing overhanging branches to increase light.
Ickleford Common is a designated Countryside Heritage Site, an area of outstanding ecological and landscape value, managed as unimproved pasture.
All concerned, including Ickleford Parish Council, manage this special space, as accessible and enjoyable for all, in accordance with common law.
