River Hiz Chalk Stream in Ickleford
The river
that runs through the village of Ickleford and through Ickleford Common is the River Hiz, a precious and rare chalk stream, one of only 200 worldwide.
Between 15 March and 15 June it is the UK spawning season, and during these dates it is illegal to fish and not recommended for people and dogs to swim/paddle in the river (or any inland water way), since it disturbs not only the delicate nutrient-rich environment but also the nesting birds and the spawning fish in the gravel bed.
There is also evidence to suggest that flea treatment of dogs pollute the water.
If you see anyone fishing in the river at this time, it would be helpful to report to the Environment Agency on their 24-hour response line, 0800 807060. This number is also on the ‘No fishing’ signs at the common. The Environment Agency will follow up any anonymous tip-off. Please do not directly approach anyone fishing.
